At The Workspace, we’re excited by the range and diversity of small businesses that entered our Entrepreneur Competition.

Innovative and varied business ideas, together with the energy of those putting them into practice, are bright signs for South Africa’s future!

In alphabetical order, these are details of the top 20 finalists in our Entrepreneur Competition.

Artsort Trading (Pty) Ltd.

(Tumi Maimela)

Founded by Tumelo Kwena Maimela in 2016, Artsort Trading provides a full range of accounting and bookkeeping services for small to medium sized businesses.

For example, the company assists businesses with monthly returns, VAT payments, payroll administration (EMP201 and EMP501) and annual financial statements.

Tumelo has many years’ experience in accounting, finance and HR, as well as in TV and production. In 2016, she left her formal employment to pursue her passion and start her own business.

Currently, the company is expanding to provide digital marketing and media services as a separate division.

Artsort Trading is a fully black-owned business.

Bridgeway International Institution

Founded in 2017, Bridgeway International Institution provides financial education to individuals, equipping them to be profitable traders in currency /Forex markets.

Convergenc3 is a creative strategy consultancy that facilitates disruptive design and strategic business engineering across converging industries globally. It boasts an international team of engineers, innovation designers and UX specialists.

The company offers strategy workshops; exponential engineering labs – which are designed to create exponential growth; UX design and prototyping; eco system design; and an industrial/process engineering service that enables continuous improvement of operations through refined Lean six Sigma methodologies.

The company’s Managing Director, Stefan Smit, is a qualified industrial engineer who owns or has partnered in several leading disruptive tech companies. He previously served as Associate Director: Strategy & Innovation at Deloitte Consulting Africa, where he received the 2014 Innovation and Market Growth “Player of the Year” award. He was also recognised as part of a wider team for the “Project of the Year” award in 2014 for the disruptive design of a new global bank.

Dwyka Mining Services (Pty) Ltd

Founded in 2012, Dwyka Mining Services is an industry experienced, results driven company offering technological and consultancy based solutions to match a variety of mining environments.

The company provides technically superior, affordable turn-key mining solutions to simplify clients’ decision making and ensure they have access to the metrics that matter.

It aims to help clients adopt and adapt to technological change, and to align, identify and harness the power of accurate and relevant data to optimise their operations.

Epitome Consulting

(Joey Mokoewewe, Ramokotho Clement)

Established in 2009, Epitome Consulting is a multi-disciplinary civil engineering and project management service provider, capable of partnering with public and private sector clients in sustainable infrastructure development.

The company offers services in six key areas – water and sanitation, water conservation and water demand management, roads and storm water, civil and structural engineering, project and programme management, and SMME development and supervision.

Epitome Consulting has a Level 1 BBBEE rating, and specialises in assisting municipalities and government departments in fast-tracking service delivery in local communities.

Iconic Talent Agency (Pty) Ltd

Iconic Talent Agency is a licensed talent agency that books talent nationwide. It manages clients’ unique talent needs from start to finish, finding the best talent, training talent and following up on every project.

The company also finds jobs for actors, musicians, models, and other people in various entertainment businesses, and offers a special curriculum to prepare students to enter the world of modelling.

Iconic Talent Agency was founded in 2015 by Kamogelo Matlhare. She spent several years in the entertainment and talent industry before choosing to start an agency with the integrity she felt was lacking in the world of entertainment talent.

Kgomo Engineering

Kgomo Engineering is an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management (EPCM) company. It provides products and professional services for medium to low-voltage and mechanical systems, with a special focus on metering and monitoring systems.

Founded in 2015, Kgomo Engineering is a 100% black-owned company. Its founder, Mashao Freddie Letsoalo, has extensive experience in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering, and in-depth knowledge of the South African energy market, including both government and private sectors.

Founded in 2015, Loyal1 is a cloud-based loyalty management platform for small to medium businesses, allowing shoppers to digitise existing loyalty and rewards cards using a single app.

Using the platform, businesses can interact with and reward their customers – and customers can avoid having to carry physical loyalty cards.

The company also aims to create an ecosystem that will enable the trading of loyalty benefits or points by users across different platforms and retailers. Its network includes supermarkets, hotel chains, entertainment venues, banks, restaurants and more.

Matla Risk Management Services

(Thabo Moodie, Nthabiseng Moodie)

Matla Risk Management Services is a finance solution company that focuses on assisting South African spaza shops and small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

Founded in 2015, the company offers trading point-of-sale systems that enable small businesses to accept card and wallet payments. It also provides systems that enable business owners to manage stock levels, place orders electronically, and generate and store data that can be used by banks to assess funding requirements.

Founder of the company, Thabo Moodie, worked in financial services for nearly a decade. He also has experience running small a bottle store and butchery, and so has first-hand knowledge of the challenges – like cash flow, payments and stock control – facing SMEs.

Minatlou Trading 251

Established in 2010, Minatlou Trading 251 supplies women’s personal protective clothing and equipment for use on construction sites, along with a range of office equipment products and consumables.

The company is owned by a black woman – unusual in the construction industry – and has a BBBEE level 1 rating.

NJ Entertainment & Associates

(Nicho Barnard)

NJ Entertainment & Associates is a professional events and entertainment company that provides event planning and coordination. It also offers training, enabling young individuals to develop and expand their skills in an industry where proper training is hard to come by.

The company offers professional vocal lessons designed by US vocal coach, Brett Manning, and approved and registered by FEDHESA and SAATME – along with assessments and international accredited exams. It also provides courses in areas such as hospitality and tourism, event management and even pilot aviation classes.

NJ Entertainment & Associates was founded in 2015 by Johannes Nicholas Barnard, who’s an award-winning actor and singer, as well as an experienced theatre director and producer.

Nthedikgwadi Transport Services

Founded by William Nthedi Kgwadi in 2005, Nthedikgwadi Transport Services is a taxi and travel company that offers local taxis, airport transfers, business travel and other travel services, including tour guides.

The company is known for its personal service and good pricing.

Raditz Global Technologies

(Hezekiel Maponya)

Founded in 2016, Raditz Global Technologies is a custom software development company that specialises in providing information management systems and technology for South African businesses and Government.

As well as hardware and software systems, the company offers technical consulting, network design and system maintenance, along with reliable and professional training, mentoring and tech support. It also offers web development, graphic design and digital marketing services.

Resurrected Youth Radio

Resurrected Youth Radio is a youth-formatted broadcasting company operating in Gauteng.

Founded in 2015, this online radio station provides top-quality international and local content, with a special focus on youth empowerment.

The station aims to inform, educate and entertain South African youth, encouraging them to look at the world from a different perspective and to learn from and support one another.

Sindis Best for All (Pty) Ltd

Sindis Best for All is an event catering company that offers professional catering and events management for both private and corporate events.

The company conceptualises and implements events that are designed to be memorable, providing tailor-made menus, along with events décor and equipment hiring.

Founded in Soweto in 2000, Sindis Best for All is a black, female-owned business. It has built a reputation for excellence and has attracted a number of corporate clients – among them, companies such as Bosch, Toyota, VW Soweto, Sasol, GM, the Steve Biko Foundation and Save the Children.

Skills of Hope Kasi Crew NPC

The Skills of Hope Kasi Crew is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that aims to equip young people from impoverished backgrounds with information and skills they can use to make a living.

Founded in 2018, it provides training, mentorship and support, and runs community outreach initiatives.

Spotlove Everydelia

Founded in 2018, Spotlove Everydelia offers professional, trustworthy residential and commercial cleaning, including both once-off deep cleaning and regular cleaning.

The company also offers yard cleaning and maintenance, school cleaning services, dustbin cleaning and auto dealership cleaning.

The Brand Studio (Pty) LTD

The Brand Studio is a Digital Design, Marketing and Advertising agency, with specific focus on branding design and marketing of digitally branded content.

The company, which was founded in 2016, specialises in branding and digital marketing through music, film and TV, online content and app development. Among the brands it has created are Campus TV and I&A.

Founder of The Brand Studio, Nelson Moropana, has experience as a writer, researcher, director and independent producer.

Isakhono Express is an online handyman service. It seeks to bridge the gap between those who have technical skills and those who need the skills by creating an online market place.

The company promotes the services of independent technicians, including tilers, painters, plumbers, carpenters, house builders and more. All technicians have relevant qualifications or more than 6 years’ experience in their respective fields.

Isakhono Express currently operates in East London.

Zinde Zinde (PTY) Ltd

(Anele Mkuzo)

Founded in 2015, Zinde Zinde is a consulting and entrepreneurship education training company that focuses on providing youth in townships and peri-urban areas with financial literacy and entrepreneurship education.

The company’s founder, Anele Mkuzo, attended the GIBS Business School, where she gained experience designing programmes for more than 400 entrepreneurs. In 2015, she received an award for designing the Women Empowerment Programme for the National Home Builders Regulatory Council (NHBC). She has also been nominated by the Mail & Guardian as one of the top 200 young Africans in the education category, and won the Rising Star Award in Fairlady’s Women of the Future Awards. She’s currently busy with a Master of Philosophy in Inclusive Innovation at the University of Cape Town.

On 6 July, the judges will announce which entrants have made it into the top five. Good luck to all the entrants!
